The background: Six years ago, Vancouver couple Geoff Baker and Laura-Lee Normandeau hatched a plan for Easywash, a nationwide chain of eco-friendly, automated car-washes. Convinced they had found an upscale niche, they set about pitching it to investors. In September, 2005, they started to build the first location—complete with a dog-washing unit—in North Vancouver.

Duff the dog hopped easily into the Pet Spa at Easywash, North Vancouver's combination car-and-dog wash. But it was downhill from there. As soon as the Plexiglas door closed behind him, the four-year-old golden retriever started to shake. When the jets opened, he tried to block the spray — first with his paws, then his mouth. But he was being soaked from all sides; soon, he gave up the fight, disappearing into a white cloud of warm water and tear-free suds. He reappeared, briefly, when he pressed his black nose against the window. After a four-minute shampoo, conditioner and rinse, the washer began its dry cycle, at 30°C. A few minutes later, the pooch leapt from the machine squeaky clean and smelling of kiwis.

As we all know, necessity is the mother of invention. Be that as it may, one day several years ago, Geoff Baker and Laura-Lee Normandeau of Vancouver, B.C., went hunting for a brushless carwash to pamper their favorite Ford. For most urbanites, fulfilling this need should have been simple enough, but for Baker and Normandeau, the necessity led them straight to another career path and right into the carwash industry.

But what exactly does being green entail for a car care business? Well, it’s something a little different for every operator. A dramatic example is Easywash in Vancouver, Canada, where a hydrogen fuel cell provides 90 percent of the carwash’s peak energy demands, and a private well and water treatment system provides water. According to Geoff Baker, CEO of Easywash, it’s the “most eco-friendly carwash in the world.”

Ahh…springtime in Vancouver. A season that blooms hope in a city that relishes its cherry blossoms is now further distinguished by the perennial success of its Sustainable Living Expo.
This past weekend vendors, consumers, and celebrities alike from all regions of North America were drawn to Vancouver's second annual Ethical Progressive Intelligent Consumer (EPIC) event.
Raffi, the popular children's singer and author, was centre stage to launch the three-day expo. His inaugural comments summed up what EPIC is all about.

A well-known North Vancouver business has filed for bankruptcy, but if all goes according to plan, no one will notice. Well, almost no one.
The owners of Easywash Inc. plan to swiftly replace the failed car wash with a new company that’s indistinguishable from the old one, minus its crushing debts. Meanwhile 89 private investors, who put $2.3 million into the original company, lose everything.
